FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE October 29, 2025
New National Federation Formed to Strengthen Regulation of Interior Design in Canada
A new national body has been formed to advance and unify the regulation of Interior Design in Canada. The Federation of Interior Design Regulatory Associations of Canada (FIDRAC) is a federally registered not-for-profit organization composed of eight provincial regulatory bodies, working together to promote excellence, consistency, and public safety in the profession.
Professional interior designers are responsible for the comprehensive planning and execution of interior environments to ensure they are functional, safe, accessible, inclusive, and aligned with the needs of the people who use them. Their work spans a wide range of interiors for numerous building types—including airports, shopping malls, schools, recreation centres, correctional and medical facilities, theatres, restaurants, libraries, courthouses, housing and workplaces. Interior Designers address critical considerations such as space planning, building codes, accessibility, life safety, materials and finishes, lighting, acoustics, and sustainability. Through a rigorous and technical process, interior designers help shape environments that support health, safety, comfort, sustainability, accessibility, efficiency, and provide meaningful user experiences.
As the regulation of interior design continues to evolve across Canada, FIDRAC provides a unified voice and collaborative platform for regulators. Its mission is to support consistent occupational standards, foster diversity in the profession, and improve labour mobility for registered interior designers across provincial boundaries. Interior designers play a vital role in creating safe, accessible, and inclusive interior environments. Aligning regulatory efforts through a national federation like FIDRAC strengthens the profession and better protects the public interest across Canada.
The federation’s founding members include regulatory bodies from the following jurisdictions:
• British Columbia – Interior Designers Institute of British Columbia (IDIBC)
• Alberta –
o Interior Designers of Alberta (IDA)
o Alberta Association of Architects (AAA)
• Saskatchewan – Interior Designers Association Of Saskatchewan (IDAS)
• Manitoba – Professional Interior Designers Institute of Manitoba (PIDIM)
• New Brunswick – Interior Designers of New Brunswick (IDNB)
• Nova Scotia – Interior Designers of Nova Scotia (IDNS)
• Newfoundland and Labrador – Interior Designers of Newfoundland (IDNL)
Each of these provincial regulators serves the public by setting the minimum occupational standards required to practice interior design within their jurisdiction and issuing licenses to those who meet these criteria. This provides assurance to the public that members of these participating associations meet the minimum standards of education, training, experience and examination. As more provinces explore regulatory frameworks for the practice of interior design, FIDRAC will play a key role in supporting a transparent, equitable, and coordinated approach. The federation also serves as a vital communication link between regulatory bodies, helping to ensure clarity and consistency in standards across the country.
