1.0 HSW

Judy Redmond and Brian Everton of Design For All Inc. will present on their 2 year research project for Accessibility Standards Canada that drew upon their combined many years of design expertise on accessibility in the built environment and working collaboratively with a multi-faceted team to explore the complexities of accessibility in heritage buildings.

The project team worked to answer how to develop a balanced way forward that respects accessibility standards under the Accessible Canada Act, while complimenting the complexity of heritage conservation standards and guidelines. The project team was an inclusive collaboration of people with disabilities, heritage and conservation experts, accessibility consultants, building officials and standards developers to contribute to the project’s iterative approach to balance the complexity of the varying layers of requirements that apply in terms of conservation of historic buildings and the human rights of those who access those facilities.

The presentation will highlight the findings of their research and the considerations for professional designers when dealing with the requirements of accessibility for heritage buildings.

Session #3: 10:50am - 11:50am - Dementia Friendly Design and Material Selection by Altro

1.0 HSW

With almost 55 million people worldwide living with dementia, there is a need for a deeper understanding of how the built environment impacts their health & wellness.

As the disease progresses, individuals find it harder to interpret their environment resulting in confusion, stress, and anxiety. This course reviews the physical and cognitive changes as well as the impact that design and the built environment has for people living with dementia.

Of all the materials in a building, flooring and wall cladding have a substantial role on the ability of a space to reinforce orientation, safety, and independence. Because of this, the discussion will focus not only on key design principles but also on the technical aspects of colour, pattern, and detailing which influence the selection and specification of dementia friendly finishes.

Session #6: 2:20pm-3:20pm - “One of These Things is Not Like the Others” - The “Building Loss Factor” - Calculating and Comparing the True “Occupiable” Area of Building Space presented by the International Facility Management Association (IFMA) Manitoba Chapter

1.0 General CEU

Why do buildings, which appear equal, having the same floorplate size, provide very different occupiable areas? This difference can be answered by understanding the “Building Loss Factor”. The Building Loss Factor is the percentage of occupiable area which is lost due to building/floor plate inefficiencies. Whether the Professional Interior Designer is looking to support a client who is looking to lease, buy, or reorganize real estate, it is critical to understand how buildings compare relative to the occupiable space they provide. This knowledge will enable the Professional Interior Designer to more accurately, forecast and plan with their client, landlord or real estate broker their client’s real estate portfolio to maximize value when performing Functional Programs or Test Fits.
